The Puffin Mahabharata published by Penguin-Books India, has simplified the epic into 176 small anecdotes with colourful illustrations by artist and animation filmmaker Suddhasattwa Basu.
The writing is stilted, awkward, the narration dry and just boring. The Mahabharata is a simply magnificent story and this version does not do it justice. Apart from that, the author insists on giving little moral lectures here and there. This is one of the worst versions.

The story follows a generation of family in “northen India” (Dvaipayana, 1235). The main part of the story begins with Dhrtarastra, Pandu, and Vidura.
Beautifully written epic story of the Mahabharata. The words transport you back in time whereby the reader can visualize the great scenes set by the author. Truly marvellous. If you are looking for a Mahabharata book than this is definitely for you. Highly recommended. Thank you.
The Ramayana and Mahabharata are two of the most famous and influential pieces of literature in Indian history. They were written around 100 BCE, but most likely were added to and changed through out the years. The Mahabharata wasn't actually collected together into one complete book until about 350.
The Mahabharata is one of the two great Indian epics, the other being the Ramayana. Composed in Sanskrit, it embodies the quintessential definition of the word epic with length of roughly 90,000 verses and a clearly defined hero upon whom his tribe depends.
